One. Year. Old.

In just one short (and incredibly quick!) year, we've gone from this

to this.

Can you believe it?!?

To celebrate Bryce's first birthday last Friday, we invited our families to tune in via Skype for Bryce's first taste of cake and ice cream. It was so much fun, and we so appreciate everyone who took the time out on a Friday night to make it really special!

The birthday boy with all his birthday trappings and loot!

We started with presents from Momma and Daddy. We got him some peg puzzles and a classic corn popper walking toy. He seemed to like them, though I think both are going to take some growing into.

I made carrot cake -- that's healthy, right?

For Bryce's "smash cake", I used some cookie cutters to shape it into a bear shape. It was so much fun to make!

He's intrigued...

Yep. He likes it.

This was when he shoved the entire nose in his little mouth. Cracks me up every time I look at it!
And then he spit out the entire nose... silly boy!

Just a couple of cake eaters.

The remains of the day.
The aftermath.

And now, a short video presentation.

Happiest Birthday to my Brycers!

These boots are made for walking

Bryce took his very first independent steps while we were away in Utah, but he's been shy about it ever since. Tonight, he got up the gumption to show off for Daddy -- and I got some (ahem, very blurry) pictures!

Such a big, brave boy!

Utah Trip

Here are a few snapshots from my little trip to visit friends and family in SLC with Brycie. We loved seeing everyone so much -- can't you all just move up here?

I know it's blurry, but I loved this little hat on Bryce.

Story times are serious times.

Brycie loves breadstuffs!

Look at these two lovebirds. I love my mommy and daddy!

Bryce has excellent finger-snatching skills.

Maika and her two darling boys, Trey and Jace.

Trey is very photogenic! Cute boy!

Jace was enjoying Maika and Casey's new tent -- they were trying it out in Winn & Laurel's backyard for the night!

Sharesies!

Torsten is getting so grown up!

Three cousins born in 2011 -- there were four born that year, but Lance was home in Washington, so he's not in this picture. Cute, cute babies in the Erickson family!

And we've lost one...

Trannan and his three boys, Aries, Ash, and Torsten

There are lots of cute pictures here, but if we're being honest this is how things went with Nanna and Bryce for the bulk of the trip. He's a little stinker!

Nanna Jean made a darling fairy garden for the kiddies.

I think Brycie approves!

This one warms the cockles of my heart!

This one, too! When did my baby boy get so grown up?

I love this child with everything in me. Sweet, sweet baby.

Walking with Papa J!

And Nana, too!

Buddies!
Lots of pictures, but good ones, and good memories to go with them! We love and miss our families in Utah, and our friends, too! We're excited to come down for Christmas! Next time, Preston will be with us for sure!

An open letter on a sore subject

To the sweet women in my life who have suffered the grief and loss of miscarriage,

I have been thinking about you. I love you all so much!

This week, two articles have crossed my path regarding things to avoid saying to you. I read them hoping that I would feel better equipped to be sensitive to your feelings. But really, they only left me feeling terrified that I might have said (probably did say, in fact) something to hurt you in the past, and that I probably shouldn't say anything in the future, since everything just hurts.

If I have ever hurt you, please know that I wanted so badly to say something to help you. If I hurt you in the future -- well, the same applies, along with my heartfelt lamentation that I still have not learned how to love you and be there for you in your moment of need.

When I was pregnant with Bryce, which has been my only pregnancy, it gave me a tiny sliver of a glimpse into how it must feel to lose something so precious, and, in so many cases, hard won. I felt so scared to open up my heart to this new little person because I had seen you wonderful, capable, nurturing women suffer so much. It is a scary thing to be vulnerable to the pain that might come if things don't turn out as you dreamed -- but I don't need to explain that to you.

But even now, I cannot fathom your loss. I ache for you. I hope for you peace in your hearts over the loss(es) you have suffered, and I still don't know what to say to you. I am in awe at the generosity of spirit you have shown me in the way of joy over my pregnancy and bringing Bryce into the world. In allowing me to share with you the little moments of his childhood -- because it probably stings sometimes to read my blog, or my posts on facebook, or see my photos on instagram, or whatever it may be. Taking care of him is my life these days, so it's what I share. You probably hate it when I complain. I think of you often when I am having a hard day. It makes me hate myself for not appreciating the gift I've been given so easily that has not come without price to people I love. But I can't discount my feelings either. Motherhood has been hard for me. I grapple with the idea of having more children because I just don't know if I can face it all again -- the difficult pregnancy, the delivery, and the post-partum craziness that has engulfed me this past year. When I think of you, each of you, I feel so ashamed that I can't hack it when you would probably be so much better than I. Or when I think of what you would give up to have children that I cannot say I would offer myself. Still, your struggles have taught me so much, and I continue to learn from each of you.

Anyway.

I don't know if I've offended anyone, once again, by putting this out there, but I felt it should be said. It doesn't come close to expressing all that is in my heart. I love each of you. My heart cries out to yours and hopes so hard that you feel that love, and that the dreams you dream come true. I may not ever understand how you have felt, but I love you, and I hope that helps even a little bitty bit.
